Yard Crashers

Let me start this post off with the weirdest thing I have ever seen on my morning commute... ever. I was driving down the street (a big, main street) towards the interstate today when out of the corner of my eye, I see something blue moving on the sidewalk. It as a full grown male peacock trotting down the sidewalk. In the middle of the city. What the what?!

I digress. I really wish that HGTV's Yard Crashers would show up and overhaul my yard for free. That would be wonderful. Our yard is in tough enough shape to make for an interesting TV show too. This weekend we did a ton of yard work. But this time, we weren't just ripping stuff out, we planted things too.You've read about our yard here. It's a mess and a half. Last year we were able to do some serious destruction, but didn't have enough time to properly plant anything before fall.

This weekend we tackled the bed in the backyard that backs up to the house. (These first few pictures are from Andy's water damaged iPhone, so excuse their blurriness).

I called that bush the "spider bush" because these things lived in there. *shudder*

So my strong manly man took a chainsaw to that bush and then dug out the stump. I'm not allowed around power tools, especially chainsaws.

Then we dug out all the random weeds and plants, tilled the soil so that it was ready for planting, and put down some weed paper. We headed to Lowe's to pick out some plants.

I chose day lilies and gerber daisies.

I decided I needed more plants, so I went back to Lowes and added a few more.

So after tackling that project, we put down some grass seed on that big dirt spot where the spider bush managed to kill all the grass. We were feeling ambitious, so we took on another smaller project.

The rose bush by the garage was blooming gorgeously, but it was exploding into the driveway. We needed to fix that. So we ripped out the limestone wall that was holding it up, added a few pavers, some weed paper, mulched, and popped in a trellis, and voila! Contained roses.

The trashy zip tie is temporary until we can permanently attach it to the garage.

And here is a gem for you. Andy bought a sledgehammer and asked me to bring it to him. This is what ended up happening.

I'm so pretty and strong. Don't be jeal. And I'm not crying, just whining that it's heavy.

So I have a sunburn on my back and I am starting this Monday off a little tired, but I am on my way to beautiful backyard.
